This collaborative project with Douglas Hoerr Landscape Architects involved the transformation of a West Loop loft’s raw roof space into something inviting, lush and comfortable. Treating the space as an outdoor family room, this roof deck expands the loft’s living space, providing room for entertaining, playing and relaxing. Stainless steel mesh panels delineate the garden/deck area from the utilitarian, mechanical roof
space,
while still allowing the frequent strong winds to pass through.
An undulating IPE wood deck and lush plantings soften the urban, industrial setting. A small lawn area provides a space for the client’s son to run through a sprinkler. An asymmetrical wood trellis provides a “ceiling” that demarcates the outdoor living room, and frames views of the city.
